A sugary alternative to Jumbo Slice

Homegrown sweets shop Nicecream, which has two locations in Old Town and Clarendon, is shooting to open in Adams Morgan on Saturday, July 21 (pending final permitting) at 1787 Columbia Road NW. The futuristic brand uses liquid nitrogen to flash freeze its assorted flavors and switches up its menu weekly (think: honey lavender and key lime pie). A second D.C. location is close behind, with a Shaw outpost (1924 Eighth Street NW) hoping to debut some time in August, events and marketing manager Tim Casey tells Eater.

Drinks for everyone

A new lesbian-friendly bar dubbed XX+ is headed for the second floor of Shaw’s Italian restaurant Al Crostino, reports Washington City Paper. The new cocktail lounge and pool hall (1926 9th Street NW) is projected to offer off-beat bar bites like beet hummus and apple pie tacos from “K.B.” Baxter, a Kyirisan alum who’s currently cooking at Ivy City’s new Gravitas. A grand opening event is slated for Sunday, July 22.

So long, Shaw muffins

Uprising Muffin Company is closing its Shaw cafe on Friday, July 27, and plans to reopen inside Langdon food incubator TasteLab, reports Washingtonian. TasteLab founder Ryan Hansan tells Eater more arrivals are on the horizon.

Booze news

DCist has a great roundup of Hamilton-themed cocktails, which might be a worthy balm to the burn of not winning the $10-ticket lottery. The Kennedy Center’s Roof Terrace Restaurant isn’t the only bar with cocktails that harken back to Hamilton’s time — including an Aaron Burr-themed drink. Nearby hotel bars Kingbird at the Watergate Hotel and The Lounge at Bourbon Steak in the Four Seasons also have Hamilton-inspired drinks. Marcel’s by Robert Wiedmaier and Hamilton Hotel’s 14K Restaurant are among the others.

Cookbook club

Eater national has the lowdown on all the best new cookbooks out this summer. Tomes range from complete explainers to knives to step-by-step guides on how to make wild color-infused natural foods (by a former Eater editor no less.) Don’t feel like leaving an A/C-equipped house to enter the D.C. (literal) swamp in search of grub? No need to.

Caffeine news

Mt. Vernon Square is getting a new coffee shop when Chez Lily opens soon, reports POPVille. Signage was spotted at 425 I Street NW.

Cocktails for movie buffs

Georgetown newcomer 1310 Kitchen & Bar by Jenn Crovato, which slid into the space formerly occupied by Daily Grill (1310 Wisconsin Avenue NW), is offering cocktails themed around Georgetown Sunset Cinema’s weekly waterfront movie showings. On Tuesday, July 17, the Blanco tequila-infused Giggle Juice cocktail is an ode to the comedy Pitch Perfect — and the first 10 guests to order it get a half-off discount.

Cheeseburger in paradise

Summer music mecca Jiffy Lube Live is now stocking concessions with Impossible Burger patties — making the Bristow, Va. venue one of the first concert spaces to serve the trendy plant-based burger. The new option for veggie fans is available at 37 of Live Nation’s amphitheaters in the U.S. Impossible Burger first appeared at chef David Chang’s Momofuku Nishi in New York City two years ago. This year, Bloomingdale’s Wicked Bloom planted the hormone-free patties on its menus.
