Adams Morgan’s El Tamarindo — one of many D.C. restaurants just cited on California congressman Duncan Hunter’s epic spending spree — is running a special poking fun at the indicted politician.
This week’s federal indictment of the Republican politician revealed he allegedly went nuts with campaign dollars, ordering 30 shots of tequila and just one steak at the late-night Salvadorian haunt to the tune of $462.46 back in 2016. Duncan, with a bachelor party in tow, also visited Adams Morgan bar Jack Rose that same night, allegedly putting nearly $400 worth of booze on campaign donors’ tabs.
El Tamarindo will offer a $10 “Duncan Combo” special on Thursday, August 23 and Friday, August 24 that includes one steak taco and a Jose Cuervo tequila shot, as a nod to the controversy.
El Tamarindo received a sea of comments on social media this week regarding the cost of its shots, and national media outlets like The New York Times contacted its owner this week.

Washingtonian broke down Hunter’s big charges at affordable restaurants, speculating on how far $202.70 would go at H Street Country Club or $127.56 at grilled cheese-haven Stoney’s.
An employee at H Street Country Club tells Eater they have “nothing planned” at the moment but promises they will be offering a Duncan-related deal at some point. Eater has reached out to other destinations Hunter hit about any upcoming themed specials and will update this post accordingly. (Jack Rose says it’s not doing anything.)
Meanwhile, D.C. bars continue to capitalize on shake-ups and blunders within the current administration. The Bird, for example, has a longstanding “Trump Associate Fired” $4 drink for happy hour and $5 “Trump Associate Indicted” Moscow “Mueller” on special at the bar.
Correction: This story has been updated to clarify the types of funds Hunter allegedly used at Jack Rose.
