Rosa Candida Ruiz Canales, the co-owner of Mt. Pleasant favorite pupuseria, has died at the age of 48. Washington City Paper reports that MPD and paramedics responded to Canales’ home last night and she was pronounced dead. There was no suspicion of foul play mentioned.
Canales owned the restaurant with her husband Alberto Ferrufino, having bought it in 1992. She began working there nearly 30 years ago, and WCP reports that she served the community, opening up the restaurant to those displaced during a fire in 2008 that engulfed an apartment building. ”She was a staple in the neighborhood,” Dos Gringos Cafe’s Alex Kramer told the paper.
Losses in D.C.’s restaurant industry this year include the passing of chef Michael Hartzer, Cowbell Kitchen co-owner Kaeley Annaliese “KK” Brady, Garden District co-founder Tad Curtz, and Millie’s manager Christian Broder.
