U Street fixture (and half-price Wednesday wings destination) Duffy’s Irish Pub is on the move. After 12 years on U Street, the bar is relocating to the H Street neighborhood — specifically to 1016 H Street NE, the former home of Liberty Tree.
“We searched far and wide to be sure we could continue operations,” Duffy’s owner Casey Callister told Eater. All neighborhoods were in considerations for the new home of the Duffy’s, since its current building on U Street is slated for development. Callister tried to move within U Street, but didn’t want to end up in a situation where the bar was closed for months. Now, the H Street spot should open within a few weeks and the U Street location will be open until mid-September (the two Duffy’s locations are slated to be open concurrently for a bit).
Callister called the space previously occupied by Liberty Tree a good fit for Duffy’s new home. “So far everyone’s been very welcoming that we’ve talked to [in the H Street neighborhood],” he said, noting that Duffy’s will be family friendly and non-pretentious, just like Liberty Tree once was. Expect the same menu at Duffy’s, but there’s one major addition: brick oven pizza. “We think that pizza and wings go well together,” Callister said. Diners can eat wings and pizza outside too now, in the patio space.
How did the news of the upcoming move from U Street to H Street go over with Duffy’s regulars? “They’ve done the calculations on how long it takes to get there and how they would go,” Callister said. He told Eater the U Street location will close on Sept. 15, so there’s still a few more weeks to get to half-price Wednesday wings nights on U Street before the big move.
