Dacha fans might want to listen in on this episode of the Beer Me podcast, because host Sarah Jane Curran chatted with the Shaw beer garden co-founder’s Dmitri Chekaldin on everything Dacha — including the new location that’s set to open across from Nationals Park.
“The place is big,” Chekaldin said on the show about the Dacha Navy Yard location going in at the Dock 79 mixed-use project at Capitol Riverfront. “It’s going to be 4,000 square feet inside and then 8,000 square feet of a park that the developer wanted us to take over and activate. It took us awhile to plan it out. It’s a complicated space.”
Byron Peck, the same muralist responsible for the Shaw location’s famous Elizabeth Taylor mural, is working on a mural for the Navy Yard space too.
As for the timeline of opening the doors to the new spot, Chekaldin added: “If all goes well, we’ll open the interior part in the winter as sort of a soft opening. The grand opening, if everything goes as planned, we’re hoping to have it in March of next year.”
Chekaldin also talked on the Beer Me podcast about what he and his team are up to for Oktoberfest, along with lots of other Dacha fun facts. For instance, all pets are welcome outside (including cats and bunnies, not just dogs), and Elizabeth Taylor’s granddaughter once stopped by the beer garden. “I’ve met her granddaughter,” Chekaldin said. “She looks at the mural and goes, yeah that’s my grandma.”
