Once-Hot Happy Hour Spot Bar Louie Closes in Chinatown

The old school gastropub suddenly shuttered 38 U.S. locations

Bankruptcy-stricken Bar Louie just served its last plate of wings in Chinatown.

The rowdy happy hour spot (701 Seventh Street NW) inside Gallery Place provided the neighborhood with an affordable place to hang before or after movies and events at Capital One Arena.

The chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection over the weekend, sparking the closure of a third of its 134 corporate-owned locations nationwide. Its Chinatown page marked the location as closed. The Texas-based chain, which got its start in Chicago 30 years ago, was forced to shrink in size due to “accelerating” revenue losses.

The Green Turtle also disappeared last year at Sixth and F Streets NW, leaving one less pregaming option near the NBA and NHL arena.

Locally, Bar Louie in Crystal City (320 S. 23rd Street) remains open, according to its website, as well as farther out locations in Ashburn and Herndon.
