12 Monster Restaurant Openings Scheduled for January

Anyone who set a 2013 goal to visit more new restaurants won't have any trouble getting things started in January. Eater has tracked down at least a dozen major restaurants scheduled to open this month, offering everything from sustainable seafood to ramen. It's likely construction drama will push some of these back to February but in the meantime, let's keep figures crossed that these dozen restaurants all make their DC debuts this month. Here's a map of them all, ranked in no particular order.

Civil Cigar Lounge

Cigar fans will want to check out this new addition to Chevy Chase Pavillion, with a small plates menu designed by Bryan Voltaggio, private cigar lockers available for rental, and plenty of whiskeys at the bar.
Status: Opening Jan. 14 (cigar store already open).

Beuchert's Saloon

Brendan McMahon, August Paro and Nathan Berger are ready for their Beuchert's Saloon restaurant to get its certificate of occupancy: they aren't shaving their beards until it happens. The owners are taking the place's historical location seriously when it comes to the restaurant's design. The menu, from PS7's alumnus Andrew Markert, skews farm-to-table.
Status: Aiming for a mid-January opening.

Ivan Iricanin, inspired by his homeland of Serbia, is offering a modern take on Balkan cuisine with this Barracks Row project. The restaurant will have dishes such as goose liver pate with apple jelly and other accents, slow-cooked pork neck with horseradish ice cream, and grilled goat cheese with duck cracklings salsa.
Status: Opening mid-January.

Taco Bamba

Victor Albisu's taqueria, located in the same shopping center as a market run by his mother, will bring tacos with unique toppings to Falls Church. He's been previewing menu items at pop-up restaurant events at Black Jack.
Status: January opening planned.

Daikaya

DC has been waiting and waiting for Daikaya, which will serve noodles on the ground floor and feature an izakaya upstairs. Sushiko's Daisuke Utagawa has partnered up with former ThinkFoodGroup chef Katsuya Fukushima as well as Yama Jewayni on this restaurant they are literally building from the ground up.
Status: Opening sometime in January.

Mari Vanna

The three-level Mari Vanna restaurant, which also has locations in New York and abroad, features traditional Russian dishes, elaborate decor and lots of vodka.
Status: Bar is open. Restaurant will open Jan. 17.

Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken

Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken looks to be the first of several of similarly themed concepts DC heard about back in 2012. The restaurant from Jason Gehring and Elliot Spaisman sports plenty of unusual doughnut flavors, and a fried chicken recipe inspired by Gehring's mom.
Status: January opening. Doughnut catering already available.

Baby Wale

Power will open a more casual spot next door to Corduroy. The 50-seat restaurant plans to serve dishes like lobster rolls, pupusas and roast chicken.
Status: Most recent opening projection was January.

Azur is one of two upcoming restaurants from Frederik de Pue, who bought the former Cafe Atlantico building last year. Azur will be housed within the location, boasting some Belgian-themed dishes, a large raw bar and sustainable seafood dishes.
Status: The restaurant originally aimed for a New Year's Eve opening but hit construction delays. Next best estimate is January.

Table, Frederick de Pue's other project, is a farm-to-table themed restaurant slated for the Shaw neighborhood. Frogs' legs, rabbit, scallops and homemade pastas are all on the menu.Status: January was most recent opening projection.

Energy Kitchen

This is the first DC outpost of Energy Kitchen, a restaurant chain where every menu item is under 500 calories, and baked or steamed. The restaurant is a favorite among celebs in places like New York.
Status: Soft opening this week; grand opening scheduled for Jan. 16.

Red Apron

If all goes as planned, two different locations of Red Apron, the charcuterie concept from Neighborhood Restaurant Group, could show up in January, at Union Market and Mosaic District in Merrifield. Chef Nathan Anda's cured meats will be the focus of both.
Status: January opening planned.
