The desire to curl up near a fire is nothing new. Something harkening back to the early days of humans (or so it says on the Internet). And as these colder months approach, DC residents once again bundle up in their Burberry coats in search of area bars and restaurants offering the glowing furnace they so crave — hoping to stare into, warm up by, and perhaps most importantly, drink alongside it.

Barcelona Wine Bar

This newly opened 14th street restaurant has been serving up small plates since October but now they stretch their winter wings, hosting a “cocktail cart” on their outdoor patio. Bartenders serve up a featured drink of the day to patrons warming up by the outdoor fireplace. To make things extra snug, Barcelona provides blankets and heat lamps. Be there for “Social Hour” from 4-6 on weekdays, with $5 select wines, $7 Sazerac, and $2 and $3 select tapas.

Head to the middle of this popular Georgetown basement restaurant and a large fireplace awaits. With nightly specials and $3 craft beer Happy Hour specials running Monday through Thursday from 4-6pm, The Tombs is the perfect spot for the chilly student on a budget. More the brunch type? Drinkers and teetotalers alike can enjoy this Farmers Fishers and Bakers’ seasonal drinks; this year they’ve got everything from Hot Buttered Rum ($12) to non-alcoholic hot cider ($6).
