Baltimore’s thriving culinary scene showcases a mix of the city’s emblematic crab cakes and treats from the Chesapeake Bay, plus globetrotting restaurants where chefs put creative stamps on dishes from Venezuela, France, Japan, Mexico, West Africa, and beyond.
The pandemic forced some of Baltimore’s favorites to shutter or pivot in a new direction. (RIP Lobo and Ida B’s). Woodberry Kitchen, the Obamas’ go-to restaurant in the area, reopened a smaller restaurant, the Tavern, and while the pandemic hasn’t stopped plenty of noteworthy spots from opening in Baltimore, like stylish new ramen shop Toki Underground, restaurants on this map must be at least six months old.
For our latest Baltimore 38 map refresh, new additions include: Mera Kitchen Collective, for carne asada tacos in permanent Mt. Vernon digs; Cafe Campli, for an Abruzzese darling that recently debuted in Lauraville; Thames Street Oyster House, for a reliable raw bar in Fells Point; Faidley’s, for fist-sized crab cakes in the revamped Lexington Market; Peter’s Inn, for martini service incredible garlic bread in Fells Point; Johnny Rad’s, for eclectic Neapolitan-style pies; Chiyo Sushi, for standout sashimi in Mt. Washington; and Ambassador Dining Room, for Indian cuisine in a stately setting near Johns Hopkins.
The following restaurants, while still worth a trip, are leaving the 38: G&M, Tagliata, My Mama’s Vegan, Samos, Ejji Ramen, and Cypriana. Crust by Mack is currently in between locations and Liora has permanently closed.
