Independent roasters and big chains fuel a caffeine boom

JOE & THE JUICE
This Bethesda outpost from a European chain has coffees in all sizes, along with a juicer and flatbread sandwiches. Sorry, no decaf for those who want their java without the caffeine kick. Joe & The Juice recently opened two locations downtown too.

202 Donuts & Coffee
Hot donuts and fresh Vigilante coffee at this Bethesda spot make it a great choice for people looking for a coffee shop vibe without the chain coffee shop scene.

Maison Kayser
This New York boulangerie now has two downtown locations in D.C. with strong Filicori coffee and fresh housemade pastries. Rather than relying on one particular roaster, a spokesman for Maison Kayser says they use coffee that is “strictly sourced for Maison Kayser depending on seasonality and other quality factors” and comes from either Guatemala, Brazil, Colombia, or Mexico.
