There's no reason to choose between caffeine and wine.

D.C. is undergoing a coffee renaissance. There are quality espresso and coffee shops cropping up across town, ready to deliver daily caffeine jolts to their customers. In addition to slinging cappuccinos and lattes, some coffee spots are starting to serve another kind of kick — a boozy buzz.

Starbucks recently announced it's bringing its beer and wine concept to several area stores, but hitting up a chain isn't the only option for enjoying a drink in a cozy, relaxed atmosphere.

A handful of local coffee shops are already in on the game (even the 9:30 Club has a coffee bar with liquor add-ons) offering everything like craft brews and even absinthe.

Whether it's time to grab a drink with a little extra kick or its simply too late to hit the caffeine, here are several of the best coffee shops in the area serving more than just lattes. This list focuses on destinations Eater primarily identifies as coffee shops. But turn to additional locations like Room 11 and The Royal to get both a caffeine and a mixed drink fix, too.
