D.C. is well known for Ben's Chili Bowl and various other takes on the half-smoke sausage, a slightly-spicy treat best topped with a hearty portion of mustard, onions, and chili. But that's not the only dish fans of delicious forcemeats (another term for fat and meat blended together) need to seek out in the District. The city is home to many restaurants and bars churning out grilled and smoked links — and many are even homemade.

Though summer grilling and picnic season may be over, fall is still a great time to chomp into a juicy sausage. Many bars, breweries, and restaurants are celebrating German Oktoberfest this time of year, with brats of all kinds hitting menus. And cooler, less humid temperatures mean more meat consumption with less risk of the notorious meat sweats.

So if the sausage craving is calling, D.C. has it covered. Here are some the best places in town for tasty links of all sorts, including no-frill dive bars to upscale butchery operations. And with the upcoming opening of HalfSmoke in Shaw, even more are soon to come.

Fan of currywurst? Check out last year's Oktoberfest celebration of the dish.
