Updating the Eater Brunch Heatmap, July 2014

Tipsters, readers, friends and family of Eater love a good boozy breakfast, and often ask the question: Where should I grab brunch this weekend? In the great tradition of the Eater 38, we could probably come up with a long list of places in this city that do brunch right. But instead we offer the Eater Brunch Heatmap, which will change often to continually highlight where the foodie crowds are flocking to at the moment.

It's been a few months since Eater updated our Brunch Heatmap, so naturally there has been some new activity when it comes to morning menus. This time around, five new brunches made the list: hangover-friendly Grotto Bar at 1914, French-leaning Bearnaise, experimental Range, comfort food-focused Creme and the South American-inspired Del Campo.

Jeff Black's latest venture is serving up dishes like monkey bread, oyster po' boys and brioche French toast with pear compote. There's also a Cure Your Ailments drink menu with offerings like a charred tomato Bloody Mary.

Water & Wall

Water & Wall's brunch features dishes like eggs with kimchi, truffled eggs and pumpkin buttermilk pancakes.

Cork has been trying to emphasize its cocktail program, with a formal menu and interesting offerings spiked with ingredients like cognac. It first started showing off the drinks at brunch service, where they accompany options like crispy polenta with poached eggs, Cork-cured Juniper gravlax and a wintery panzanella with roasted tomatoes.

The Grille recently changed its brunch from a duck press-accented buffet to an a la carte French brunch (here's the menu).

Baklava French toast and spit-roasted chicken and waffles grace the menu at Kapnos during brunch hours. There's also spiked coffee, and orzo pasta bake and more.

Bar Charley

Just this week, Bar Charley announced its new brunch menu, which debuts Saturday. There's a prix fixe option that includes a basket of cheddar biscuits for the table, a choice of entree, and the choices of bottomless Mimosas, Bloody Marys, Bloody Beers (Schlitz and house-made bloody mix), Schlitz tallboys or Zeke's Coffee, all for $23.95. There's also an a la carte menu with items such as French toast and roasted mushroom omelette.

City Tap House

City Tap House also kicks off its first brunch service this weekend. Look for such dishes as foie gras French toast, chicken and waffles, pizzas, a bottomless brunch bar (with Bloody Marys and mimosas) and more.

Osteria Morini

This Navy Yard restaurant is offering dishes like a mortadella frittata, ricotta pancakes with whipped marscapone, and other items. The restaurant will also have a play on Eggs Benedict served on a tigelle bread. There are DIY mimosas, pastries and brunch cocktails as well.

Urban Butcher

Brunch at Urban Butcher allows diners to branch out beyond meat (though there are still carnivore-friendly items like crispy pig tails and steak frites). Expect brioche French Toast, scrambled eggs with broccoli rabe, a smoked trout omelet and more.

Alba Osteria

Alba Osteria's brunch features a mix of Italian-inspired dishes and breakfast classics. There are several options for diners: a bottomless food and drink option for $29.95, a variety of a la carte items, and the ability to add bottomless cocktails for $18 per person to any orders.Some of the brunch offerings include fried eggs and meatballs, egg white frittatas, brunch pizzas and Monte Cristo sandwiches with egg. There's live music, too.

Red Apron's weekend menu is brunch-friendly, whether a diner is seeking more breakfast-like or lunch-like items. There are sandwiches, tigelle breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, scrapple and burgers. They open at 9 a.m.

Bearnaise launched its brunch menu this spring. Dishes include French omelets, Bloody Marys, creme brulee French toast, moules frites and more. The hangover cure is a crispy pig's feet hash.

Range launched brunch this June, and that means unique takes on chicken and waffles (fried chicken livers, blue cheese waffles, and smoked balsamic syrup), steak and eggs, French toast with smoked cream cheese and fruit, and more.

Mother's Day marked the beginning of Del Campo's Sunday brunch. Dishes include bacon, egg and cheese empanadas and chorizo and egg hash as well as spins on classic dishes, like smoke scrambled eggs and cast iron pancakes. $20 bottomless mimosas, or more unique cocktails such as one spiked with squid ink, are other options.
