The owner of the 6-month-old bar is already selling

Six months after making its H Street debut, cocktail bar Ella Grace is already on its last legs. First-time restaurant owner Mark Abraham tells Eater he plans to close the two-level venue in the former Pursuit Wine Bar space (1421 H Street NE) by April.

The bar is already for sale, and Abraham says his asking price ($100,000) is low considering that a coveted liquor license is included. He plans to include all the luxurious decor and furniture he inherited from his stylish South Beach grandma in a potential handoff.

Abraham’s main reason for closing the bar is because he has to relocate to Los Angeles for his law enforcement job. It also didn’t help that managing partner Bryce Heyn, who formerly stirred drinks at cozy Shaw cocktail den 600 T, departed this month. His brother, opening chef Jacob Heyn, is still on board.

For its last hurrah, the bar will up the party vibe to go out with a bang, serving more shots, bottled beers, and batched cocktails to keep orders flowing faster. Expect ’90s music like Nelly and Ludacris playing all night.

“We are turning it into the classiest dive bar in D.C.,” says Abraham, a D.C. native and Army vet.

“[We have] great cocktails, but it’s not practical on a slammed Friday and Saturday,” he says.

Ella Grace was originally a cafe by day, but Abraham switched to nights only a few months ago.

“We were six months to a year ahead of the curve,” he says, noting the neighborhood will soon grow with the addition of new apartment complexes. Anticipated Indian-influenced cocktail bar Daru is gearing up for a spring debut nearby.

Before cooking up a short menu for Ella Grace, Heyn made pastries at Del Mar, Fabio Trabocchi’s acclaimed Spanish place on the Wharf. Highlights included meatballs with goat cheese and dried currants; a bowl of Japanese Koshihikari rice, kimchi, egg, and imported, barrel-aged Iwashi fish sauce; and black sesame chiffon cake.

Ella Grace had a short-lived stint on M Street NW a year ago before looking for a permanent home. Abraham and his partners took over the space in early August, soon after Pursuit left (the wine bar relocated last fall a few blocks West).

The bar is open daily from 5 p.m. to midnight. Sporadic industry nights on Mondays include half-priced wines and $5 beers. Abraham says a month-to-month lease is $5,300.

“It’s just how much [more] do we invest to keep it going ... if I’m stuck in L.A. and no one is running it? I hope someone buys it and keeps it the way it is,” he says.

Here’s a look at its closing menu:

Owner Richard “Dickie” Shannon tells WJLA reporter Sam Ford that his landlord is pressuring him to leave the space in the booming nightlife district that has punk rock venues, dive bars, and soul food spots next to new high-rises, a Whole Foods, Starbucks, and trendy restaurants.

“Gentrification is cultural genocide,” Shannon tells WJLA.

The National Community Reinvestment Coalition published a study last year that said D.C. had the highest percentage of gentrifying neighborhoods of any city in the U.S. between 2000 and 2013, and around 20,000 black residents were displaced over that period.

“I kind of got to be the Willy Wonka of cocktail bars for five years,” owner Derek Brown says

Here lies D.C.’s thirstiest Instagram trap.

Derek Brown has pulled the plug on Drink Company’s Pop-Up Bar (PUB) in Shaw. For the past five years, Brown and his team whipped up a series of constantly rotating, elaborately decorated themed bars designed around everything from HBO’s Game of Thrones to D.C.’s famous cherry blossoms.

The pop-ups at 1843 Seventh Street NW were the ultimate selfie backdrop, and Washingtonians lined up around the block to get the perfect photo — and legit cocktails from the team behind the much-acclaimed Columbia Room. Washingtonian originally reported the news today that Drink Company wouldn’t put on a new pop-up after shutting down its holiday-themed Miracle on 7th Street installation on December 31.

“It’s expensive. It takes a lot of expense to open a bar every month and a half,” Brown says. “There’s a whole process to follow to make sure it looks great, make sure the cocktails are great, get the staff ready, and it takes a toll.”

No decor detail was spared, and the logistics behind each new opening were intense.

“We have to hire a new staff every time we do it, we have to come up with an idea around it. Because so many things there are handmade, we have to build a lot of stuff out,” Brown says. “We have to rent studio space so we could build stuff while the other pop-ups were going.”

Brown says that his team gave up the space, so he’s not sure what will go there next.

During PUB’s run, the Drink Company channeled buzzy TV shows like Netflix’s Stranger Things. It served cocktails in carved cow horn mugs for its super-popular Game of Thrones Pub.

One pop culture touchstone went awry, as Brown ran into a copyright dispute with Turner Broadcasting and Cartoon Network that forced him to dismantle a Rick and Morty-themed bar a day after it opened (he then enlisted shock rock band Gwar to destroy it).

He calls the GoT bars “unbelievable,” and says they even sparked international attention: “I was interviewed for Russian and Chinese television,” he says.

“It was a labor of love. It was fun,” Brown adds. “I think we did something really cool. I kind of got to be the Willy Wonka of cocktail bars for five years.”

The Miami-based chain lasted less than a year in Northern Virginia

Health food-heavy fast-casual counter Dirt has permanently closed, leaving one less chain for vegan and gluten-free fanatics in Arlington.

The small chain out of Miami opened its first location outside of Southern Florida at the new Ballston Exchange development (4121 Wilson Boulevard) in April. Eater confirmed the restaurant permanently closed in late January. ARLnow first hinted at a possible closure.

“I can’t say much about it but I’m pretty sure they were doing a good business here. I have been told that all the DIRT restaurants have closed,” Ballston BID CEO Tina Leone told Eater in an email. Soon thereafter, Miami restaurants in South Beach and Brickell suddenly shuttered, according to the Miami Herald.

Ownership did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Dirt co-founder and partner Jeff Latulippe stepped down last fall to “focus on the next chapter for him and his family,” among other reasons, according to the Herald. The newspaper reports that employees were informed of the closures in a late-night text message from the regional director of operations that directed them to operate restaurants until they ran out of products.

Dirt aimed to appease all types of dietary restrictions across a ridiculously long menu of all-day breakfast dishes, toasts, salads, bowls, plates, smoothies, juices, pastries, coffees, and teas. Lots of food fads were also in the mix, like matcha protein pancakes and non-dairy “mylkshakes” made with plant milks and vegan ice cream.

Eater confirmed that at least three local purveyors listed on the menu (Pluma Bakery, Ice Cream Jubilee, and Little Wild Things) hadn’t been sourcing to Dirt for a few months. A Miami employee told Eater that Dirt was originally hoping to expand to Dupont Circle this summer.

A flurry of homegrown partners helped fill out the opening menu in Ballston. There were bagels from Park View’s Call Your Mother; vegan pastries from Doron Petersan’s Sticky Fingers and Fare Well, and coffee from roasters at Grace Street and Alchemist. Local cider and beer hailed from Anxo, Port City, and 3 Stars breweries.

Dirt won over its hometown fans soon after its 2005 debut. The Miami New Times crowned it the best inexpensive restaurant in town. Eater Miami maps featured it for healthy yet delicious dishes and Miami’s best açaí bowls.

Despite showing signs of promise, the import experienced some bad luck in Ballston from the start. Weeks after opening, a can of cooking spray caught fire and exploded in the kitchen, sending a rush of flames through the kitchen and into the dining area at the height of lunch rush.

Claudia’s Steakhouse called it quits on January 30, according to a closing announcement posted on its website. The website and the restaurant’s Instagram post reads:

It is with deep regret that we much announce the definite closing of our restaurant, Claudia’s, starting January 30, 2020. We want to thank everyone for five wonderful years of support. We loved making good food and most all serving you!

Claudia’s opened in June 2015 in a massive space at 1501 K Street NW near the White House. It boasted room for 400 diners, lots of glossy glass tile, and nightclub-esque red leather.

Claudia Rivas, the steakhouse’s namesake who also ran Brasas when it was in Waldorf, took over cooking duties from opening chef Brad Race in the fall of 2015. When Washington Post critic Tom Sietsema visited for a “First Bite” column in 2015, he was more into empanadas and whole snapper than the steaks.
